MATT PARKER – tenor saxophone & flute
Matt Parker was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has played the saxophone for eighteen years. After graduating from the New World School of Performing Arts high school in Miami, Florida Parker moved to New York to devote his practice to New York’s unique collection of resources, energy, and culture. After attending the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music he began playing and recording with artists including the legendary jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson, Junior Mance, Reggie Watkins, Phil Woods, Reggie Workman, Martha Reeves, Anna Clyne, Josh Mease, Alan Hampton, and David O’Rourke.
In 2008, Parker founded the experimental music ensemble 2s & 4s with his long-time collaborator and friend, Julio Monterrey (Alto Saxophone). Performing regularly in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, 2s & 4s engages their audience with innovative and original improvised music, performance art, installations and creative/musical games.
Parker also regularly performs with Billy Fox’s Blackbird and Bullets, the Truthseekers, and is a first call saxophone player in New York’s burgeoning vaudeville scene.
Parker brings a rich palette of both bold and delicate tones complimented by a powerful yet warm presence. His compositions and recorded original music have been used for a variety of artistic projects, ranging from film to dance.
His most recent recording credits include Maynard Ferduson’s M.F. Horn VI: Live At Ronnie’s (2006), Elizabeth and the Catapult’s Taller Children (2009) and Billy Fox’s Dulces (2009). He is currently writing and recording his first solo album as bandleader.
